YES WE CAN

I was working long hours the whole week so was not updated with recent events. I was watching the US elections closely though because (1) it is historic - choice between having the first black president and the oldest elected president and (2) whoever gets voted will face a rough and tough time ahead and will make the most crucial decisions involving American and global economy, war in Iraq among others.

I love the message Obama's win brings. That, YES WE CAN. That everything is possible. No one saw this coming - a black president in the White House! Obama may have less experience than McCain but he is fresh and inspiring, a visionary and I have faith he would do well. With what he has done to get him to where he is now, he deserves to become the President, the most powerful person in the world.

Congratulations! I wish we would also have the chance of choosing between two great candidates in 2010...It was a WIN WIN for America.

Just Stand Up - All Star

Great song sung by the greatest female artists of our time!!! Who would have thought it was possible to bring Mariah, Fergie, Rihanna and so many more on one stage!

Fergie was great! Her voice was distinctive. Everyone else did good except for Miley. She was...well, you be the judge!

Fact

A fact in life is that people come and go. At my office, people come and go at a higher rate than what the saying intends.

One of my collegues recently said goodbye -rather, see you soon!- to the team. We have had several despedidas as a tribute to him for his contributions in enriching work and our lives, touching it in more ways than one. Pao, you deserve more than those despedidas! Take care of Ron although I am sure you will do! Stay kalog!

wastedfood.com

One of the top stories on nytimes.com today America’s Scraps, Another Country’s Meal is very timely with "food/rice shortage" and consequently, rising food prices. (And with Bush's comment that the rising income of India's middle class is causing food shortage which India rightly responded back with how much America is wasting). You may want to add global warming because food in the landfills produces greenhouse gases.

The article provides data on how much edible food is wasted in America and Europe (around 25%) and reminds again that with rising food costs and limited resources, food aids now distribute a less quantity of food to a growing number of people in need.

At home, we were raised to eat what is on the plate and not leave anything behind (bad luck in Chinese because they say you will marry someone who looks like a cat if you do). Do not get more than you can consume. It is, for me, an injustice to everyone else who do not have food to eat, to waste food or to eat more than what is right even.

I do not like it when I see people throw away food and I do see it everywhere and everytime. My parents think and I agree that some people feel it a sign of social superiority that they can afford to waste food. I wish we were more sensitive to others because we all live in ONE WORLD. And whatever we do do affect other people.

See wastedfood.com on how to help.

Interesting Stats

We are super lucky it is only raining here in Manila. In other parts of the world (in Asia rather), there are so many things happening. The cyclone in Myanmar, then more recently the earthquake in China. Both disasters with so many casualties, just being safe and alive makes you feel blessed.

Blessed enough to give? See below intereseting stats on donations to victims of recent tragedies I saw on freakonomics.com:

1. Asian Tsunami (Dec. 2004)
220,000 deaths
$1.92 billion

2. Hurricane Katrina (Aug. 2005)
1,577 deaths
$5.3 billion

3. Pakistan Earthquake (Oct. 2005)
73,000 deaths
$0.15 billion ($150 million)

Makes you think...Hoping good comes out from these bad situations.

We're Brothers Forever by Renaldo Lapuz Dedicated to Eli

GoodAh! Open 25 Hours

What if we had 25 hours in a day instead of 24? Would it make any difference?

The cliches TIME FLIES and LIFE IS SHORT would support this dreamy thought of mine. In the series Heroes, Hiro Nakamura has the strongest power, that of stopping and controlling time and space. I wish I had that too. I will make happy times longer and sad times shorter.

However I concentrate on stopping time though, this is realistically impossible. And even if we had more time in our hands, I do believe we would take that for granted like we do the 24 hours we have.

Thus, we would have to stick to tried-and-tested ideas like time management and prioritizing. It is hard to be young now. With so much to do and so little time, you have to be a SuperWoman to juggle family, friends, and work and at the same time have FUN. It may be overwhelming at times (and I do feel overwhelmed) but at the end of the day, when it is time to rest your weary head, and if you tried your best to do things you have to, it so nice to sleep feeling accomplished and fulfilled. And thinking that the next day, there are another 24 hours to try to be a Super Human.

Hello Singapore!

I was in Singapore with my sister last March during the Holy Weekend. We had a blast, of course. And personally, it was a great cultural experience as all the travels I have had were. Aside from the scenic spots which defines a place, it is the unique culture which I am after and of which I take whatever I can and then turn them into memories to last forever.

Singapore is a very small place, similar to Manila except for the cleanliness and discipline. It is much more developed than Makati or the Fort. The second you leave the airport you will immediately admire the way the country is organized. Outside the city, the tall apartments line up the roadsides, all looking new and all of the same color. My guess is that this is where people from Class D to B live. There are no shanties or at least I did not see them on my visit there. I did not notice any beggars as well although I am sure they exist anywhere in the world even in the richest countries like Japan and Europe.

It was funny because at one point on our trip we were standing at a pedestrian stoplight, waiting for the light to turn green. There were no cars, the road was empty. Just a group of people on both sides of the road patiently waiting and thinking at the back of their minds whether or not to cross the road even if there was a good 40 seconds left on the stoplight. After some time of debate, exchanging glances with people on the opposite side of the road with eye contact revealing we were in the same dilemma, we finally crossed the road. It was really weird because common sense would dictate that you can cross the road since the road is clear but discipline states otherwise and that we should wait for the stoplight.

As I have mentioned on my previous post, I was a good student and did research before I went to Singapore. I was able to go to most of the places on my 'to go list' and was able to try most of the ones on my 'to try foods'.

It would take a gazillion words to share the experience. So I am leaving a few pictures for your eyes only. They did say 'a picture paints a thousand words'. Enjoy!

Planning the Perfect Vacation

I am super excited for this year's holy week because it does not fall on the first business week of the month, which when it and other holidays do, I have to work while everybody else plays.

This year, my younger sister and I are spending the holidays somewhere in Asia. Unfortunately, since we booked the tickets a little late, last week of January (I heard that other people plan their holy week vacation a year in advance), not only did we get more expensive tickets as opposed to when you book the tickets earlier, but we also did not get the best flight times. We are leaving Thursday afternoon and coming back Sunday afternoon as well which leaves us to roughly around 48 hours to spend in the Island.

Since February, I have been checking out places to go, things to do, and food to eat from the internet and from friends who have been to the place. Today, I have finished the schedule (you read that right!) with activities by the hour my sister and I would hopefully follow. Otherwise, if we fall behind schedule, we might not be able to do the other things on the list.

I am a bit worried though because we have hotel complimentary breakfast. This means we only have lunch and dinner to eat out. And considering all the food and desserts I would like to try, I do not know how these foods would fit my schedule, let alone my stomach.

Oh well. Happy Easter everybody! :)

Boys Do Fall in Love- Parokya ni Edgar

I love Parokya's version of Boys Do Fall in Love, originally by the Bee Gees circa 1984. Chito Miranda singing makes the song more Filipino (Filipinized) and makes the experience and possibility of Boys Falling in Love closer to home. (Hear the revival by clicking on the play icon on the right.)

I do believe that boys fall in love. Not as much as girls do, though. :)

And she said boys do fall in love, they make time,
they get love on a Saturday night.
And she said hearts beat as they dance
in the street to a radio, oh.

I Left my Heart in San Francisco

Man! How could I miss it???

The other day I watched a special Follow that Food episode (on the Lifestyle Network) where the subject was chocolate (I suppose in line with Valentines). The show format takes viewers from the raw produce to the finish product of an item. On that particular episode, the host went from the cacao plantation to a chocolate cake on a birthday celebration.

I honestly learned a lot on that 30-60 minute presentation. Now I know that the best cacao beans (much like coffee beans) are sourced from Africa and Latin America in countries like Venezuela (LatAm) and Madagascar (S.A.). At the Scharffen Berger factory in SanFo, it takes time and scrutiny to turn those beans to become one of the best chocolates in the world. The owners of the company was firm in telling that they did not want to produce so much chocolate, afraid that the quality will suffer. In fact, their annual production volume is only as large as the volume of what the next biggest chocolate factory produces daily.

I want to try Scharffen Berger. I have heard a lot about it (see MarketManila post here) but do not know where to look for it locally if there is. When I went to San Francisco (where the factory was located) a long time ago, I was not familiar with the brand (I was super happy with Ghirardelli). But now, it seems something is missing. My passion for chocolate draws me to want to try Scharffen Berger. Hopefully sooner than later.

(The episode ended with the host following that bar of chocolate to the grocery and then following a buyer to her home where she bakes a yummy cake (chocolate, of course!) to take to a friend's birthday).

See Scharffen Berger website here.

Not So Amazing Finish

I hate it when people spoil things for me.

I was suppose to watch the replay of the last episode of Amazing Race Asia Season 2 this weekend as I was at work last Thursday. Friday morning, as much as I did not want to know who won the race, my officemates were already talking about the season ending and news have spread over the internet.

Adrian and Collin finished first much to the disappointment of so many people especially me. It was surprising because Marc and Rovilson were consistently placing either first or second on all the other episodes but ended up the last team on the last leg of the race.

Kudos to Amazing Race Asia staff on keeping the results from being known until the last episode was televised. I was somewhat doubtful though during the season run as they were already airing Adrian and Collin's Sony Commercial.

Despite the not so amazing finish, I am super proud of Marc and Rovilson for playing the race best. They were fair, displayed sportsmanship, and their relationship with each other and towards other teams is admirable. Never once would you see them arguing over a mistake. They were always forward-looking, never sticking to errors made.

Congratulations Marc and Rovilson! As cheesy as it sounds, you made the whole country proud because you proved that Filipinos are a great race. In addition, you proved that good looks is possible and can co-exist with wit, humor, and attitude. And winning is not as important as enjoying the experience!

Crazy Crush

I have not had a crush for the longest time. Well, I have one longtime crush (for 8 years, he has a girlfriend now) and some more shorttime crushes and so I wanted to look for someone who can possibly be remotely interested in me.

And how unfortunate that the new apple-of-my-eye is someone who is also unreachable and impossible =( Haha. I am thankful though that at least I have someone new to think of. Self mental note: Must look for a "real" guy.

It is crazy-this thing called love.

The Bucket List

On my January entry (click here), I mentioned that I did not like that some people live-to-write their blogs. But I just want to share this great movie I saw yesterday, The Bucket List, starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman.

The movie is about two cancer patients who lived the most of their last days fulfilling things on their Bucket List (sort of like a wish list or a things-to-do-before-I-die list).

On top of the pyramids, Carter (played by Freeman) told Edward (Nicholson) that in the Egyptian lore, you are asked two questions at the gates of heaven. These are:

1) HAVE I FOUND JOY IN MY LIFE?
2) HAS MY LIFE BROUGHT JOY TO OTHERS?

Something to think about...

And please do me a favor and watch the movie. It will surely make you laugh and cry. I will give a refund for those who watch the movie and do not like it.

Selfish Confession

It is but natural for man to be selfish. I read in Time Online before that people in general feel better when others are in worse conditions than they are. That way, they are in relatively better situation.

With the US "recession", I am sure a lot of us on this side of the world are glad because the currency exchange rate is becoming more in favor of us-travel and imported goods are cheaper, etc. May I remind that this is not totally attributed to the Philippine economy doing better than US, but mostly because the US dollar is weakening.

I mentioned sometime ago here in my blog that I work in a middle office for what I strongly believe to be the best financial company in the world. We do work for them and it creates huge savings like call centers do for their counterparts.

The sad reality is that while we gain jobs from the outsourcing industry, others lose theirs. And as much as we are happy that higher minimum wages, overhead costs, and shrinking profits outside are encouraging companies to hire someplace else where labor is cheap like India and the Philippines thus creating job opportunities, when you think of it, you are part of the reason why people in the US for instance are losing their jobs (equivalently, losing their homes and sticking to a tighter budget) and or finding it hard to get a job.

Speaking on their behalf, it is unfair competition because they have not way in beating the low wages we offer.

What is ideal is that each country rely on their own economy in terms of job generation. That each country become self sustaining, creating jobs because of high internal demand. Income generated from the outsourcing industry is "superficial". It makes you think that the low unemployment rate is due to better economic activity (true, better investments). The fact is, this makes us more dependent to other countries. In short, we are nothing if other countries cease to exist. If we were doing really well, how come other people continue to leave the country for work?

Thus, as much as I am more than happy to invite in job opportunities, I wish that this outsourcing dependency is temporary, that jobs be created for the local industry, and that in the near future, Filipinos do not have to look someplace else to earn money.

Just for the Sake of It

Blogging has become so popular among internet users now that it seems like being an internet user equates to being a blogger. Ask your friends, they have their own blogs which may discuss topics from food and restos, travel and adventure, photo sharing, rants and raves, so on and so forth.

In her June entry http://www.dessertcomesfirst.com/?p=567, Lori, my ultimate favorite blogger, tells of how she has been worn out of all the blogging to the point that she does not enjoy life experiences anymore.

I know some people who live-to-blog and I am quite bothered by it. I once would have fallen into this trap- that is to say that I would spend an entire day thinking of topics to blog about and stress myself to write an entry at least once each week.

For me, blogging is an expression. You should write only when you feel like writing. It should not take over your life. You must enjoy experiences as it is and when you can not contain these experiences or thoughts within, that is when you blog about it.

Some people for instance make it a point to critic the food they eat at restos just to give a review. This is so wrong because instead of enjoying it, you would not be able to because you are focused somewhere else.

Makes sense?

What My Name Means

I do not believe that typing your name on a site called whatsyournameshiddenmeaning will tell what you are as a person. But I try it nonetheless. Besides, it does not promise to tell you who you are. Just what your name means. So here is what I got.

***What Joyce Means***
You are fair, honest, and logical. You are a natural leader, and people respect you.You never give up, and you will succeed... even if it takes you a hundred tries. You are rational enough to see every part of a problem. You are great at giving other people advice.

You are well rounded, with a complete perspective on life. You are solid and dependable. You are loyal, and people can count on you.At times, you can be a bit too serious. You tend to put too much pressure on yourself.

You are a free spirit, and you resent anyone who tries to fence you in.You are unpredictable, adventurous, and always a little surprising. You may miss out by not settling down, but you're too busy having fun to care.

You are very open. You communicate well, and you connect with other people easily. You are a naturally creative person. Ideas just flow from your mind.A true chameleon, you are many things at different points in your life. You are very adaptable.

You are friendly, charming, and warm. You get along with almost everyone. You work hard not to rock the boat. Your easy going attitude brings people together. At times, you can be a little flaky and irresponsible. But for the important things, you pull it together.

What's Your Name's Hidden Meaning?
http://www.blogthings.com/whatsyournameshiddenmeaningquiz/

Funny I got a very similar result with my sister. Do not know how they generate the meaning (based on letters of your name?) but they probably get random phrases/sentences from a pool of answers they have. Surprisingly, I can say most of the things mentioned above is true for me.

Try yours just for fun.

A Warning to Guys

Do not ever show the girl the wrong signs.

Do not act like her boyfriend when you are just friends. Because if you continue doing that, for the girl, you are not just friends. A girl can pretend it is nothing, play your game like everything is cool and casual between you two. But what the guy never knows and never feels is that inside, the girl is falling -truly, madly, and deeply.

Do not make her feel extra special and do not give her all the time and attention if it is just nothing or if you are still confused with what you feel. The girl is not confused. It is pretty clear that she goes out with you because she likes you.

Even if there are no expectations, it is your fault if a girl falls for you and if you "unintentionally" hurt her with your actions. Do not blame it on us guys. Blame it on yourself why each and every girl in the world for once in her life cried over your population.

If you are insensitive, girls are the opposite. Do not play with our hearts because it is easy for you to move on. It is hard for us and takes months or years even. Do not make promises you can not keep. We know promises are meant to be broken. But every time a promise is made, anyone can not help but hope that the promise is kept.

We love you boys. But be a man.

And a Happy New Year...

Happy new year to all!! I had a good night's rest despite the loud but amazing fireworks display which welcomed the new year. I slept early but managed to catch the exhibition near us. It was grand.

This morning, I woke up early to a cool and beautiful weather. The sky is blue- wow. And the quiet is relaxing. It looks like a beautiful day ushering another wonderful year. :) Looking good.
